High Definition TV (HDTV) is a digital television broadcasting system with a significantly higher resolution that traditional formats like NTSC, SECAM and PAL. It is also capable of theater audio quality as it adopts the Dolby Digital (AC-3) format to support up to 5.1 surround sound effect.

HDTV is more like a theater in higher quality than conventional TV, having the highest resolution and best viewing quality on very large screens. Usually HDTV programs are produced from movies on film as well as content shot in HD video.

There are three standards of HDTV defined by International Telecommunication Union. They are 1080i (1080 actively interlaced lines), 1080p (progressively scanned lines) and 720p (720 progressively scanned lines). All these standards are based on 16:9 ratio in order to simulate into human physical vision. Even screen size is larger without sacrificing the picture quality.

With much better picture quality than standard TV, HDTV’s greater clarity also makes the pictures on screen less blurred and less fuzzy. It also brings smoother motion, richer and more natural colors, surround sound and allows a variety of input devices to work together. However with higher quality content and device, it still needs quality transmission of signal to cope with in order to maximize the quality level. It is where HDMI connection works.
